Tools to Increase Resiliency

Mental strength, or resilience, is the ability to weather and bounce back from adversity. We all possess mental strength to some degree but some people just seem to have more of it than others.  Several factors help determine mental strength:

  1. Genetics.  Some people’s genes make it more likely that they may develop mood disorders which can affect mental strength.
  2. Personality.  Some people have personalities that make it more likely that they will see things in life more negatively or positively.
  3. Experiences.  A person’s experiences in life effects the way that person sees and reacts to the world.

In spite of these factors, there are things we can do to improve our mental strength, some of these are:

  • Surround yourself with friends/family who display strong mental health
  • Recognize that in even in the most difficult situations there is opportunity to learn and grow
  • Always maintain a sense of hopefulness
  • No matter the situation, find things to be grateful for
  • Embrace change
  • Seek opportunities to challenge yourself

In addition, learning to better manage emotional and mental disorders, working through past trauma, and learning to talk more kindly to yourself can be a big step in increasing resilience.  A therapist can be beneficial in helping you with these issues and can give you the tools and support you need to help improve your ability to bounce back from setbacks.
